Remember Lot’s Wife: Don’t Look Back at What God Is Calling You Out Of

📖 Bible Story

There are moments in Scripture when God’s instruction is simple, direct, and urgent.

One of those moments appears in Genesis 19.

The cities of Sodom and Gomorrah were under judgment, and God, in His mercy, sent angels to rescue Lot and his family before destruction came.

The instruction was clear:

“Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.”
(Genesis 19:17, NKJV)

God was not asking them to understand every detail.

He was telling them to leave.

Leave the environment.

Leave the corruption.

Leave the familiarity.

Leave what was behind them.

And move toward the place of safety He had prepared.

Lot, his wife, and their daughters began to flee.

But then Scripture records one of the shortest and most sobering verses in the Bible:

“But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.”
(Genesis 19:26, NKJV)

She had physically left Sodom.

But something in her heart was still connected to what God was delivering her from.

Her feet were moving forward.

Her attention was backward.

And Jesus Himself later used her life as a warning:

“Remember Lot’s wife.”
(Luke 17:32, NKJV)

Three words.

But a powerful message.

Do not allow your attachment to yesterday to interfere with what God is doing today.

❤️ A Word for You

Beloved,

Sometimes God’s greatest work in your life requires you to stop looking backward.

There are things God delivers you from that you are not supposed to revisit emotionally.

Old relationships.

Old habits.

Old environments.

Old wounds.

Old identities.

Old disappointments.

Old versions of yourself.

There are seasons when God says:

“I brought you out. Now stop turning around.”

Lot’s wife had already been given an exit.

She had already been given mercy.

She had already been given direction.

But her heart still wanted one final look.

Beloved, be careful with one final look.

One final conversation.

One final visit.

One final compromise.

One final return to something God already told you to leave.

Not everything behind you deserves closure.

Some things deserve obedience.

And sometimes closure is simply accepting:

“God said move.”

You do not need to understand why every chapter ended.

You do not need everyone to explain themselves.

You do not need to keep revisiting the scene of your pain in order to prove that you survived it.

If God brought you out, honor the deliverance by continuing forward.

There is another important lesson in this story.

The danger was not only Sodom.

The danger was attachment to Sodom.

That means you can leave a place and still carry it in your heart.

You can leave a relationship and still replay it every day.

You can leave a season and still live mentally inside it.

You can forgive someone and still allow what happened to dominate your identity.

You can enter a new opportunity while comparing everything to the old one.

Beloved, God does not only want to change your location.

He wants to change your focus.

Paul wrote:

“Forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead…”
(Philippians 3:13, NKJV)

Forward requires focus.

You cannot run effectively toward what God has prepared while constantly turning around to examine what He told you to leave.

And sometimes what is behind you was not entirely bad.

That can make leaving even harder.

There may have been memories there.

Comfort there.

People you loved there.

Familiarity there.

But familiar does not always mean assigned.

God can love you enough to disrupt your comfort because He sees what your comfort is preventing you from becoming.

Beloved, sometimes the next level of obedience is simply refusing to return to the old one.

Do not romanticize what God delivered you from.

Do not rewrite history because the future feels unfamiliar.

Do not call bondage “comfort” just because you recognize it.

Do not exchange freedom for familiarity.

And do not confuse nostalgia with instruction.

Jesus said:

“Remember Lot’s wife.”

Remember what happens when the heart insists on holding what God says release.

So today, ask yourself:

What am I still looking back at?

Is it a person?

A mistake?

A betrayal?

A lost opportunity?

A former lifestyle?

A version of yourself?

A season you wish had gone differently?

Bring it before God.

Then choose forward.

You may not know everything waiting ahead.

But you know Who is leading you.

And that is enough.

🙏 Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for every place, relationship, habit, mindset, and season You have delivered me from.

Today, I choose to honor Your deliverance by moving forward.

Forgive me for the times I have looked backward with longing toward things You told me to release.

Search my heart and reveal every attachment that is competing with my obedience.

Break every emotional connection to what no longer belongs in my life.

Deliver me from nostalgia for seasons You have already closed.

Deliver me from fear of the unfamiliar.

Deliver me from returning to habits, people, environments, and patterns that are inconsistent with Your purpose for me.

Give me courage to move when You say move.

Give me discipline not to revisit what You told me to leave.

Give me faith to trust that what You are leading me toward is greater than what You have brought me out of.

Heal the parts of me that still feel connected to yesterday.

Renew my mind.

Redirect my focus.

Strengthen my obedience.

And teach me to press toward what is ahead with confidence, peace, and expectation.

I will not live backward.

I will walk forward with You.

In Jesus’ mighty name,

✨ Today’s Declaration

I declare that I am moving forward with God. I will not return emotionally, spiritually, or physically to what He has delivered me from. My past will not control my present, and yesterday will not sabotage my future. I release old relationships, old wounds, old habits, old identities, and every attachment that conflicts with God’s purpose for my life. My eyes are fixed ahead. My heart is surrendered. My steps are ordered by the Lord. I will remember Lot’s wife, obey God’s instruction, and continue toward everything He has prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
